GUWAHATI, Jan 10: The 3rd Khelo India Youth Games got off at a glittering opening ceremony at the Sarusajai athletics stadium in Guwahati amid a razzmatazz that highlighted Assam’s diverse culture and illustrious history.
From displaying the rich culture, heritage and history of Assam, the other main highlight of the opening ceremony was a spectacular performance by well-known singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan who left the capacity crowd at the stadium and millions watching it on their TV screens in their homes speechless.
The Breathless-famed singer sang Bhupen Hazarika’s famous ‘Bistirno Parore…’ to a thunderous applause from the audience.

Ace Assam sprinter Hima Das lit the games torch following which the third edition of the games, aimed at encouraging more children to take up sports and also pursue it as a career option, was declared open.
Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, other ministers, senior government officials and several sports organizers attended the opening ceremony of the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games that will end on Jan 22.
Around 6,800 athletes representing 37 States and union territories are competing in 20 sports disciplines at the 3rd edition of the games.
