Khasi women marrying outside tribe to lose ST status

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has approved a social custom that aims to strip Khasi women of her Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and other privileges if they marry non-Khasi men.

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Second Amendment Bill, 2018, passed on Wednesday, would also apply to the women’s children who would also be deemed non-Khasis.

The KHADC passed the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018 during its summer session.

KHADC CEM HS Shylla said similar directives in the form of customary laws could be passed for Khasi men in future.
