Kaziranga National Park registered 4,43,636 tourist footfalls from Oct 1, 2024 till May 18 this year, marking a 35% increase in tourist arrivals
Kaziranga National Park in Assam has become the third most visited national park in the country with the internationally-famous wildlife habitat registering record number of tourists during the past season.
The internationally-famous national park, home to the one-horned rhinoceros, clocked 4,43,636 tourist footfalls from Oct 1, 2024 till May 18 this year, marking a 35% increase in tourist arrivals, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in a post on his ‘X’ handle.
The number of international tourists flocking Kaziranga during this period was 18,463 which is 25% higher than the footfall of foreign tourists last year, the Assam Chief Minister further stated.
Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve (KNP&TR) Field Director Sonali Ghosh attributed the increase in tourist footfall to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the national park in 2023 and the subsequent visits of several high-profile visitors which also included Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and the 60 Heads of Mission accompanied by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit earlier in February this year.
Meanwhile, the Kaziranga National Park will remain open for tourists — both domestic and foreign — till May 31 although it was earlier announced that park would close its gates from May 19 ahead of the rainy season during which floods batter the park.
However, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, it is learnt, asked park authorities to keep Kaziranga open for tourists till May 31 considering the number of visitors who are keen to visit the park in the coming days and also considering the fact that the rainy season has still not started.
