GUWAHATI: The Congress in Assam is witnessing an internal tussle among its top leaders for the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president’s post. Member of Parliament from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi, Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia and Bhupen Bora are the top contenders for the post. Present APCC president Ripun Bora has tendered his resignation to the Congress high command after the party lost badly in the recently-held Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
As per sources in the party, former cabinet minister Rockybul Hussain is trying his level best to stop Pradyut Bordoloi. Leaders and MLAs from the state have been sending letters to the high command to nominate Bhupen Bora as the APCC president. In the letters Debabrata Saikia has been kept as the second option.
If sources in the Congress are to be believed, the letter campaign has been led by Rockybul Hussain who has a firm grip on the party. Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi had accused Rockybul Hussain of controlling the party. It is on the instructions of Hussain, senior leaders of the party and MLAs are sending these letters to the high command proposing Bhupen Bora and Debabrata Saikia’s name as APCC president so as to stop Pradyut Bordoloi.
