PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: Gauhati High Court has directed the commissioner of Assam transport department to install GPS (Global Positioning System) in all buses in Guwahati. The court has directed the transport department to ensure that GPS is installed in the buses plying in the city within the next six weeks to track their movement.

The high court has also asked the department to make sure that doors are fixed to the buses for the safety of the passengers. The buses without doors will not be allowed to ply on the roads for a month.

A division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Ajai Lamba and Justice Soumitra Saikia issued these directives in connection with the PIL (72/2016) filed by Rita Das Mozumdar to ease traffic congestion in Guwahati arising out of haphazard parking, ill-management of traffic, unscientific traffic control, etc.

In order to ease traffic congestion in all arterial roads in the city, especially GS Road and MG Road, the high court has directed the transport department to rationalize route permits.

The divisional bench has also asked the Guwahati Development Department and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority to take all possible steps for the installation of CCTV cameras at red light points within three months.

On the other hand, the court further directed the concerned authorities to ensure that city buses do not stop at Jalukbari Rotary Point. It has also asked the commissioner and secretary, Public Works Department and the commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation to take necessary steps to remove the food vendors from that area.

Meanwhile, a report indicating compliance of the court’s directions to be filed before the divisional bench on or before February 3.
