Independence Day: J&K on alert as intel warns of vehicle-borne terror attacks on forces

New Delhi: Day before the 74th Independence Day, a security alert has been sounded in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) following the inputs of possible vehicle-borne terror attacks to disrupt the celebrations on August 15. Security forces are on high alert in J&K after receiving intelligence that terrorists may launch terror attacks ahead of the Independence Day.

The inputs, according to the sources, indicate that terrorists have been planning to carry out attacks at various locations in J&K. Security forces in Butham and Gulgam areas of Kulgam could be targeted on or before Independence Day, sources in the security forces said.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) report, accessed by India Today, says Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) have tasked their operatives to carry out the vehicle-borne IED attacks on the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the intelligence report, an alert has been sounded in seven specific areas in J&K. These areas are Pulwama, Baramulla, Srinagar, Kupwara, Shopian, Kulgam, and Doda.

The intelligence report also reveals that about 40 JeM terrorists waiting at launch pads at Losar, Taobat and Sardari to infiltrate into J&K from Gurez sector.

This is the second Independence Day celebration after Centre’s decision to scrap Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, dissolving the state into two Union Territories (UTs).
