Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a veiled attack on Gaurav Gogoi for comments made at the Waqf bill debate in Parliament
GUWAHATI, April 4: Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today took a veiled dig at Gaurav Gogoi for claiming that Muslims were not allowed to offer Eid prayers on streets in Assam saying that he feels ashamed that an MP from the State has made such a statement in Parliament.
Gaurav Gogoi, while opposing the Waqf amendment bill, had stated during the Waqf Bill debate in Lok Sabha that Muslims were not allowed to offer Eid prayers on streets in Assam.
Chief Minister Dr Sarma said while addressing reporters after a meeting of the State cabinet in Guwahati today (April 4) that people of Assam do not want to offer namaz on roads and streets since there are good mosques and Idgaahs in the State.
“People of Assam also do not want to offer namaz on roads and streets when there are beautiful mosques in the State” Chief Minister Dr Sarma stated, without naming the Jorhat Lok Sabha MP.
“We are ashamed of what the Congress MP had stated and I as the Chief Minister of the State apologise to people across the country”, he added.
Chief Minister Dr Sarma also took potshots at Gaurav Gogoi for also claiming that only one particular community was involved in the country’s freedom movement and said he hoped that people of Assam would “teach him a lesson” for making such highly controversial comments.
Gaurav Gogoi, while claiming in Lok Sabha during the Waqf amendment bill debate that “the Bill will weaken the Constitution, target minority communities, and promote division in society”, highlighted the role of Muslim freedom-fighters in India’s freedom struggle.
CM Dr Sarma, responding to the Congress MP, claimed: “Does he want to claim that Mahatma Gandhi had no role in the freedom movement?”
