In a historic first, erstwhile militancy hotbed Kokrajhar hosts opening day of Assam Assembly’s Budget Session

GUWAHATI, Feb 17: The seat of power in Assam shifted for a day to Western Assam’s Kokrajhar town — once known for militancy, violence and fratricidal killings — as the Assam Legislative Assembly assembled there for the inaugural day of the Budget Session.

The inaugural day of the session is being held at the Secretariat of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), an initiative of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma that has been highly praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“The NDA Governments, both in the Centre and Assam, have been working tirelessly to empower the Bodo community and fulfil Bodo aspirations. These works will continue with even greater vigour.

I fondly recall my own visit to Kokrajhar, where I witnessed the vibrant Bodo culture,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on ‘X’ quoting a post by Chief Minister Dr Sarma on the same platform.

While Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma left for Kokrajhar yesterday night, fellow ministers and MLAs were transported to the Western Assam town in chartered buses from Guwahati early today morning.

“It will be a historic moment as it symbolises the return of peace in the state and integration of all people. Kokrajhar, once a hub of Bodoland agitation, will host a special a one-day Assembly session,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier said.

One of the main highlights of the session was the inaugural speech of the Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya where he highlighted the achievements of the government.

The session also included presentation of the Supplementary Demand for Grants and the supplementary allocations for the financial year 2024-25.

The inaugural day’s proceedings also included a vote of thanks on the Governor’s address.

On the conclusion of the inaugural day’s sitting, the assembly will reportedly be adjourned to meet at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati on Wednesday (Feb 19).
