The India Meteorological Department (IMD), while issuing the alert, said heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable pockets of Guwahati

IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Guwahati for next 2-3 days ~ Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to lash Guwahati and its adjoining areas in the next 2-3 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned.

“The weather pattern suggests that thundershower with 75% predictability with heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at the isolated places of the city on today to coming 2-3 days which may aggravate water logging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable pockets. The city authorities are closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert,” the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated in a statement, a copy of which is available with News Live.

The ASDMA, in the statement, asked people of Guwahati to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant keeping in view the recent incidents of landslides and waterlogging following the heavy rainfall in Guwahati on May 30-31.

“Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides. Residents in vulnerable areas are further advised to keep adequate stock of essential items such as medicines, candles etc,” the ASDMA further stated.

“They are advised to reach out to ASDMA on 0361-1070, 0361-1079 and DDMA on 0361-1077,” the statement also stated.

ASDMA also asked people living in landslide-prone areas of the city to shift themselves to safe shelters (relief camps) or other safer places of their choice for the next 3 days.

People have been asked to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure their safety during this prolonged spell of rain.
