The Congress doublespeak on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, has once again been exposed after Silchar MP Sushmita Dev, who is also a member of the joint parliamentary committee on the proposed bill and president of the All India Mahila Congress, stating in no uncertain terms that she supports the bill.
Speaking exclusively to News Live in New Delhi ahead of the crucial JPC meeting of which she is a member, the Silchar MP said the bill is not just for Assam but for the whole of India and that since people of Barak Valley support the proposed legislation, she, as their representative, is inclined to take their views into consideration.
“This bill is not just for Assam, it is for the whole of the country. People from Bangladesh have not come to Assam only. They have come to Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat etc. It applies to the western as well as the eastern border,” she said, adding that there have been requests to also include Tamilians, people from Myanmar, etc to be included under the ambit of the bill.

“There is no denying that people of Barak Valley support the Citizenship Amendment Bill. And as their representative, I am inclined to consider their views,” Dev further said.
Incidentally, the Assam Congress party has been double-speaking on the issue. While the party leadership in the State claims it is opposed to the citizenship bill, Sushmita Dev along with other party leaders of Barak Valley are openly supporting it.
