Hyderabad: 17 people, 8 of them children, killed in devastating fire near Charminar

The fire near Charminar in Hyderabad broke out early Sunday morning and many of the victim were still in their sleep

17 killed in blaze near Charminar in Hyderabad: At least 17 people have been killed in a devastating fire that broke out in a two-storey building at Gulzar House near Charminar in Hyderabad today (May 18).

Eight among the 17 killed are children.

The fire is believed to have started due to an electrical problem and the victims were caught unawares since they were sleeping when the blaze began at around 6.16 am.

It took more than 10 fire tenders 2 hours to bring the fire under control,

Reports said around 20 people were taken to nearby hospitals after they were found unconscious or suffering from burn injuries as a result of the blaze.

The deceased have been identified as Prahlad (70), Munni (70), Rajendar Modi (65), Sumitra (60), Pankaj (36), Hamey (7), Sheetal (35), Varsha (35), Rajini (32), Iddu (4), Priyansh (4), Rishabh (4), Anuyan (3), Arushi (3), Iraaj (2) and Pratham (1.5).

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the fire and expressed his condolence to families losing their loved ones in the inferno.

He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

“Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy in Hyderabad, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.

An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” Prime Minister Modi announced.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also expressed shock and grief over the incident and directed officials to take necessary measures to rescue those trapped in the building.
