Hunger strike by NEHU students enters second day

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI, Nov 7: The indefinite hunger strike launched by students of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, entered the second day with the protesting students seeking the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof VC Shukla, Registrar Omkar Singh and Deputy Registrar Amit Gupta.

While the students continued their hunger strike, Prof Shukla made his stand very clear that he will not resign, nor will the Registrar and the Deputy Registrar step down.

The students and the NEHU teachers’ association have been demanding the removal of VC Shukla, accusing him of misusing power and being anti-tribal besides also seeking the dismissal of Registrar Omkar Singh and Deputy Registrar Amit Gupta, labelling them “errant, irresponsible, and inefficient.”

The students’ hunger strike is led by the NEHU Students’ Union and the Khasi Students’ Union NEHU Unit.

Earlier, the NEHU Teachers’ Association also voiced support for the students’ demands.
