The remaining HS 1st year exams from March 24 to 29 were cancelled after question paper leak in Mathematics and Economics subjects
GUWAHATI, March 23: A day after the HS 1st year exams from March 24 to 29 were cancelled after question paper leak, angry parents and guardians have asked the Assam State School Education Board (Division II), earlier known as the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), which conducts the higher secondary examinations to not play with the future of students.
After the board postponed the Mathematics paper of HS 1st year exams, which was earlier scheduled to have taken place on March 21 (Friday), a decision was taken to cancel the remaining subjects scheduled from March 24 (Monday) to March 29 with the board apprehending question paper leaks in other subjects as well.
Incidentally, News Live had reported on Friday night and on Saturday morning that question paper of Economics of HS 1st Year exams was also leaked and that copies of the same were available on social media and were being circulated through WhatsApp.
Despite the leak, the board went on and conducted the Economics examination yesterday creating resentment among students, parents, guardians and conscious citizens.
The Assam State School Education Board (Division II) on Saturday issued an official order cancelling the remaining examinations which were scheduled from March 24 to 29, allaying fears of question papers of the other subjects getting leaked as well.
“The examination of Mathematics subject of the HS First Year Examination-2025 was postponed vide Notification No. ASSEB-II/HS First Year/Instructions/2025/02 dated 20/03/2025 on the basis of the reports received regarding alleged leakages of question paper.
All Inspector of Schools and Principals of Lead Colleges had received back the sealed packets of question papers of Mathematics, on the basis of instruction issued by the Board and from their reports it is seen that some of the institutions have opened the sealed packets of question paper on 20/03/2025, whereas the examination was scheduled to be held in the second session of 21/03/2025.
Keeping in view of the above, it is presumed that leakages of question papers in the rest of the examination cannot be ruled out, as all the question papers of remaining subjects are in the custody of each institution of Assam where examination is being held.
Therefore, it is decided that the examination of the remaining subjects of HS First Year Examinatiuon-2025 as scheduled earlier from 24/03/2025 to 29/03/2025 are hereby cancelled.
The further course of action will be intimated to all concerned, in accordance with the decision to be taken in the Board meeting to be held on 24/03/2025.” the order signed by Assam State School Education Board (Division II)Controller of Examinations (in-charge) Ranjan Kumar Das stated on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the cancellation of the examination has led to angry reactions with parents, guardians and students questioning as to how the malpractice could have taken place and why could the board not prevent leak of question papers.
“This is really strange. Why are authorities playing with the future of students? Do they not know how significant the higher secondary examinations are?” a parent whose ward is appearing in the HS 1st year exams said.
“The HS 1st year examination gets cancelled or postponed means we would get even lesser time to prepare for our final year examinations. Who will compensate the loss? Why can’t the board hold examinations without letting discrepancies creep into the system?” a student said.
