Homen Borgohain, Surya Das honoured with Karam Singh Janambhumi Award

GUWAHATI: Renowned journalist and litterateur Homen Borgohain and veteran singer Surya Das have been honoured with Karam Singh Janambhumi Award-2019 at Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Nagaon on Saturday. The awards have been presented by Karam Singh Trust.

The award which has been instituted in the memory of Assam Agitation martyr Karam Singh carries Rs. 50 thousand, a citation, a memento, xoraai and  an angabastra.

Karam Singh was a resident of Barkola village under Nagaon district who was martyred in 1983 during Assam Agitation.

Receiving the award, eminent writer Homen Borgohain said, “I pay my tribute to the martyr in whose name this award has been instituted. It has been more than two hundred years since Assamese Sikh people came to Assam and assimilated with Assamese culture.

Another awardee Ganasilipi Surya Das said, “Assamese people don’t know how to give recognition to someone. Government is doing politics in the name of martyrs.”

The award-giving ceremony was attended by many well-known personalities including Dr. Nagen Saikia, Dr. Kandarpa Kumar Deka, Dr. Naren Kalita, Dr. Nanda Singh Borkala along with many others.
