Former Assam Minister Haji Abdur Rauf Chaudhury and his wife Farhana have been arrested after police registered a suo motto case in connection with the incident of physical assault of a minor girl in Hojai district of Assam.
A video which has now gone viral on social media showing Farhana beating the minor girl with a stick and Haji Abdur Rauf Chaudhury watching the act while sitting on a sofa.
The minor girl, the woman said, was brought to their house a year ago after her father passed away and her mother had little amenities at her disposal to provide her a better life and education. The girl, she added, never used to study nor pay attention in classes at her school.
After the video went viral, police swung into action and rescued the victim girl and detained the couple for questioning.
They were later arrested on Friday.
“One day her school complained to me about how inattentive she is in class. So I beat her and filmed the video intentionally”, said Farhana.
She said that her husband had no idea about the video she filmed.
Former Minister Haji Abdur Rauf Chaudhury also said that he had no idea about the video and that whatever happened is very unfortunate and nobody should do such a thing.
The mother of the victim alleged that although they claimed to give the child a better life and an education, they actually forced her into child labour. She demanded justice for her child.
This is the second such incident being reported after Dr Waliul Islam and Dr Sangeeta Dutta were arrested by Assam police for physically assaulting the twins, of late.
