Assam Police has sought detailed reports from Gaon Burhas (village heads) and Village Defence Parties (VDPs) of Hojai district, including village heads of Jamunamukh, on the present statuses of youths who have been away from home, including those who had left Assam to seek employment in other States.
The move comes in the wake of the arrest of Hizbul terrorist Qamer-uz-Zaman at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh where he was planning to carry out terror strikes during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Following Qamer’s arrest, seven other people who were in touch with the Hizbul militant, were also taken into custody with police launching a crackdown on the Pakistani terrorist organization.
Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia, Special Branch DGP Pallab Bhattacharjee and other senior cops said in Guwahati that they have also stressed the need for better intelligence sharing with police teams of other States while also maintaining that terrorist organizations like the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, JMB and HuJI are trying to set up bases in Assam.
