GUWAHATI: In a humane gesture, Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took responsibility of medical treatment of two siblings suffering from blood cancer.

Residents of Chaygaon, Kamrup Rural, the two sisters Zahida Begum and Jahanara Begum are daughters of Nazia Bibi and are suffering from blood cancer for past 6 years.

The story was covered by News Live (Assamese 24×7 news channel) on Saturday evening. Within 24 hours after it was telecasted Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma met the mother of the ailing children and took the responsibility of bearing all the expenses of their treatment.

Being a single mother Nazia Bibi was not able to bear the expenses of the treatment and had urged the government and Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to help with the medical expenses for her daughters’ treatment.

“It is quite unfortunate that both the children are suffering from such a disease. Currently both the children are receiving treatment at GMCH and going through their medical reports I believe the disease can easily be cured with proper medical attention right from chemotherapy to bone marrow transplant,” said Dr. Sarma.

He also added, “The chemotherapy has already started here at GMCH and for the bone marrow transplant they will be sent outside and the entire expense will be covered by the state government.”

Nazia Bibi thanked Dr. Sarma for his kind gesture and is hopeful that her children will receive adequate treatment.
