Shillong: The police have seized over 500 gram of heroin worth over Rs 1 crore from a woman and arrested her from here.

Acting on a tip off, the anti-narcotic team of state police raided the rented house of the woman and found over 500 gram of suspected heroin powder packed in 39 soap cases, East Khasi Hills district SP C Lyngwa said on Wednesday.

The police arrested the 49-year-old woman hailing from Jiribam district of Manipur after the raid on Tuesday.

A local court remanded her to 14 days’ judicial custody.

The district police chief warned house-owners that they will be charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act if they allow their premises to be used for drug trades.

A customs official told PTI that the challenges before law enforcement agencies at present are to stop the in-flow of drugs through the porous the Indian-Myanmar border.

Most psychotropic drugs such as heroin, cocaine and metampethmine are smuggled from Myanmar and then sent to Manipur or Mizoram, from where these are further distributed to different parts of the region and other parts of the country, he said. PTI
