Haiti gang massacres nearly 200 people over witchcraft fears, Voodoo practitioners targeted

GUWAHATI, Dec 10: Nearly 200 people were killed in brutal weekend violence reportedly orchestrated against voodoo practitioners in Haiti.

The killings, which took place in the western seaside neighbourhood of Cite Soleil, were planned by a powerful gang leader who believed that his sick son’s illness was caused by voodoo practitioners, the civil organization the Committee for Peace and Development (CPD) stated.

Gang leader Monel “Mikano” Felix ordered the massacre in the densely populated slum as attackers armed with machetes and knives went on a killing spree.

Reports said majority of victims were above 60 years while young people who tried to save others were also killed.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the violence terming it “horrific”.

These latest killings bring the death toll in Haiti this year alone to a staggering 5,000 people.
