TC Government Girls’ HS School, Guwahati, has decided to replace the decades-old ‘mekhela chadors’ with salwaar-kameez as uniform for students from Class VIII to XII. A decision in this regard was taken during a meeting between governing body representatives, teachers and guardians of the school.
The decision to replace mekhela chadors as uniform was taken considering the fact that students are more comfortable wearing salwaar-kameez which also takes less time to wear in comparision to the traditional Assamese costume.
Meanwhile, both present and past students of the school have welcomed the decision.
“It’s good and we welcome the decision. Coming to school in mekhela chadors daily consumes a lot of time. Moreover, it was also difficult to take part in games and sport and other extra-curricular activities wearing mekhela chadors,” a student of TC School said.
The new uniform will be formally introduced after the summer vacations.
