The Food Safety department launched an early morning raid at Guwahati’s commercial hub Fancy Bazaar Tuesday and seized many kilograms of mangoes and other chemically-ripened fruits.
Two fruit businessmen were also reportedly detained.
The raid began around 5:30 am with Food Safety officials checking fruits that were stored for sale.
The raids were carried out following reports of fruit sellers injecting calcium carbide and other chemicals into fruits to artificially ripen them.
The seized fruits were later destroyed at the dumping ground at Boragaon on the outskirts of Guwahati city.
