GUWAHATI: Festive spirit has gripped the city of Guwahati as the residents welcome the new year. The temples and other places of Guwahati witnessed huge footfalls on the first day of new year. The citizens pray for the well-being in the new year as they had gone through a difficult year in 2020 which was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On December 31, people thronged market places, parks, malls and restaurants, among other public places to bid adieu to 2020.

Many of the picnic spots in the vicinity of Guwahati witnessed huge footfalls as people got together with their families and near and dear ones, waiting to bid farewell to 2020. Similarly, malls and roadside markets also witnessed a huge rush of shoppers
By the evening, city dwellers, especially the youngsters, converged at hotels, discos, bars, restaurants and pubs among other places for New Year eve parties.
In view of the New Year eve celebration, when the entire city wore a festive mood after a long time, the city police also beefed up security. Police took stern steps against drunk driving and at many places men in uniform conducted drives against the same by using breath analysers to detect the level of consumption of alcohol among drivers.
