Guwahati: ULFA(I) cadre arrested in Panjabari

GUWAHATI: Amid heightened security in Assam ahead of the upcoming India Sri Lanka cricket match and Prime Minister Modi’s visit, Guwahati Police arrested a United Liberation Front of Assam ULFA (I) cadre in Panjabari, Guwahati on Wednesday night.

Acting on information, Guwahati Police nabbed Bitopan near Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra around 9 pm and recovered a mobile phone and some documents.

He was among the four ULFA (I) cadres who were planning to carry out subversive activities during the cricket match and the high profile visit of the PM.

Assam Police sources said that Bitopon’s confessional statement makes it clear that four more ULFA rebels have been hiding here and he was supposed to meet them.

According to the Namrup District Police station ULFA (I) cadre Bitopon Sonowal is a resident of Kawoimari village, Namrup, Dibrugarh.

The police have arrested Bitopon in connection with a case (3355/18) against the outfit, and produced him before the court. He has been sent to two days of police remand.
