Guwahati: Sharjeel Imam tests COVID-19 positive

GUWAHATI: Jawaharlal Nehru University student Sharjeel Imam who has been lodged at Guwahati Central Jail for alleged sedition charges tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

Imam was arrested and brought to Assam after his comments calling for Assam to be “cut off” from the rest of the country at an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest rally.

He is accused of conducting “inflammatory and instigating speeches” against the government and was booked under IPC sections 124A (sedition), 153A and 505.

“Delhi Police Special Cell had applied for his production warrant in Assam as he is lodged at Guwahati Central Jail & he was going to be presented before a Delhi Court on 25th July, but will not be produced now,” news agency ANI reported quoting Delhi Police sources.
