GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Press Club elections are underway. The election is being conducted to elect a new Committee and office-bearers.
A total of 36 candidates including eight female candidates will contest for 10 posts. 816 members of the GPC will vote to elect the new committee.
The excitement of the Guwahati Press Club election is no less than a civic poll as journalists were seen asking for votes almost like politicians.
The polling started at 08:00 AM today morning and the vote-counting process will begin at 05:00 PM.
“First of all, I thank everyone. The election took place after 17 years. Everything now depends on the voters. It does’nt matter who the candidates vote for, they should form a good committee,” said Dhiraj Hazarika.
It is to be mentioned that the decision for the elections was taken after a group of young journalists collected the signatures of 76 members who agreed for an election. The election is taking place after a long gap of 17 years.
