Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked voters of Guwahati, and congratulated Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), inched closer to a near-sweep in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections, the counting of votes for which is underway.

“Thank you Guwahati! The people of this lovely city have given a resounding mandate to @BJP4Assam to build on the agenda of development. They have also blessed the hard work of the state government under CM @himantbiswa. My gratitude to every BJP Karyakarta for the hard work,” tweeted PM Modi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  has registered a thumping victory in the 60-member Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections.

The BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) swept the hustings winning 58 seats among them while the grand old Congress party failed to win even a single seat in the GMC elections.

On the other hand, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) and the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) opened their accounts winning one seat each.
