Guwahati: With the elections for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation set to take place on April 22, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going all way out to reach out to all section of voters.

Yesterday evening, Assam Cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika met with leaders of the Assamese Muslim community.

The meeting saw Hazarika engage in discussions with leaders of Assam’s indigenous Muslim communities ad seek their support for the BJP in the upcoming GMC polls.

While the incumbent BJP is confident of forming the board by winning a majority of the seats in the GMC elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which recently won the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections has now shifted its focus to Assam and hopes to give the BJP a fight in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, after having suffered defeats one after the other in various elections including the recent Rajya Sabha polls, the Congress is gearing up to contest the GMC elections as well.

The polls for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation will be held on April 22 and the results will be announced on April 24.

A total of 208 candidates are in the fray for the GMC elections.

More than 7.96 lakh voters are registered to exercise their voting rights in the GMC polls.

Half of the total 60 seats have been reserved for women candidates in the elections, which is a significant step forward.
