Guwahati: Man Arrested in Patorkuchi for Selling Illegal Teer Gambling – In an afternoon raid on April 12, 2025, the Basistha Police Station staff conducted a swift operation in Patorkuchi area after receiving a tip-off about illegal Teer gambling activities being carried out. One person was apprehended during the raid, and several items related to the illegal activity were seized from the spot.
According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Sanjay Gupta, aged 39 years. He is currently residing in Beharbari under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police Station in Kamrup (Metro) district. His permanent address is listed as Dalan Chhapra village, under Dokati Police Station in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh.
Items Recovered During the Raid:
- Illegal Teer books
- A mobile phone
- Cash amounting to ₹590
Teer, a traditional archery-based betting game, is regulated in certain parts of the Northeast but remains illegal when operated outside authorized zones or without proper licenses. Police said that the accused was engaged in selling Teer tickets illegally in the area and was caught red-handed during the operation.
The Basistha police team has registered a case and further investigation is ongoing to identify other people possibly involved in the racket.
This raid is part of the Assam Police’s ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal gambling operations and maintain law and order in the city. Police have urged the public to report any suspicious gambling activity and assured strict action against those found involved in such crimes.
Locals in the area appreciated the swift police action, saying such steps were necessary to stop the spread of illegal betting, especially in residential zones.
