Five landslide deaths were reported in Guwahati after heavy rains lashed the city since May 29
Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia each for Guwahati landslide victims: The Assam Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the five people who were killed in landslides in Guwahati following the heavy rainfall that lashed the city and other parts of the State since Thursday.
“As per our existing policy, our government will provide Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the five landslide victims. We will ensure that the families are provided with the cheques by today itself and necessary directives have already been given in this regard,” Jayanta Malla Baruah, Minister, Department of Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of Assam, told News Live after attending a review meeting with the Kamrup (Metro) district administration in Guwahati today (June 1).
He further stated that efforts are underway to ameliorate the woes of the people affected by artificial flooding and landslides, and that the priority now is to provide relief to people staying in waterlogged localities.
“We are now focussing on providing relief to people living in waterlogged localities and those affected by landslides,” he said.
“Since heavy rainfall comes without a warning, it becomes difficult for us to provide instant relief to people of areas impacted by severe waterlogging. Hence we are looking at the possibility of storing relief in areas near water-logging prone areas,” Jayanta Malla Baruah further stated.
Meanwhile, barring a spell or two of light showers, there has not been any heavy rainfall in Guwahati since Sunday morning following which the situation in most water-logging prone areas is showing sharp improvement.
