GUWAHATI: Huge rush at markets, people violate weekend shutdown

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: As India entered unlock 3.0, weekend lockdown continues to be in place across the State.

Despite orders by the State Government and respective district administrations of stringent punishment against those violating the weekend lockdown, people across the State continue to violate curbs imposed in view of the pandemic.

In Guwahati, roadside markets were choc-a-bloc with people, defying all norms of social distancing. In Pandu, people were seen jostling with each other to buy fish, meat and vegetables. Both buyers and sellers not only violated social distancing norms but were also without face covers.

“I do have a face mask. Since I have to talk to the seller so it’s in my pocket. Nobody is msintaining social distancing here,” a person who had come to the market to make some purchases said.

Similar scenes were seen at a market in Lokhra, posing a serious threat to public health.

But the question remains as to how these markets were allowed to operate right under the nose of Jalukbari police, when stringent restriction are in place. Allegations of inaction have also been levelled against Jalukbari police.

It is only when News Live brought the incident to light did police swung into action and evicted the petty traders

Despite the spike in the number of COVID 19 cases people continue to defy social distancing protocols and many are yet to realise the seriousness of the situation.
