Several areas of Guwahati witnessed massive waterlogging as large volumes of water was seen flowing into the city from the hills of Meghalaya which has seen rampant tree felling and earth cutting over the past many years
As continuous rainfall in and around Guwahati led to severe waterlogging in several parts of the capital city, videos have shown large swathes of water entering Guwahati from adjoining Meghalaya, compounding the woes of the people.
Videos showed water gushing from the hills of Meghalaya and inundating large swathes of land in Guwahati.
Another video showed water coming down from the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), which has earlier been accused by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma of waging a “flood jihad” against Assam.
Several districts of the State, including Guwahati and its adjoining areas along with the nearby hills of Meghalaya, have been receiving heavy rains since Thursday.
Several localities of the city are reeling under knee-deep water.
Along with the severely waterlogging-prone areas of Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Wireless locality of Beltola, Panjabari and Chandmari, severe waterlogging also brought life to an almost standstill in Jorabat with water from the hills of Meghalaya inundating the highway leading to a catastrophic situation.
The State government has also issued two helpline numbers — 0361-1077 and 9365429314 — in the wake of the severe flooding in the city.
The IMD had on Wednesday (May 28) warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Guwahati and other parts of Assam, especially Southern and Western, for the next 2-3 days.
Weathermen have warned that inclement weather conditions will continue in Guwahati and its adjoining areas along with western and southern Assam at least for the next two days with issuing a red alert for Assam till Saturday (May 31).
Authorities, meanwhile, have asked people to stay alert and follow updates from official sources and to avoid unnecessary travel considering flooded streets and by-lanes.
