KARIMGANJ, Sep 23: Ending speculations as to when the Government will reintroduce the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament, Assam Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the Government will table CAB in Parliament in November.
Sarma said this at a public meeting in Karimganj.
He, however, reiterated that the interests of indigenous communities of Assam and the other Northeastern States will be safeguarded.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 was passed by the Lok Sabha on Jan 8. The Government, however, did not table it in Rajya Sabha considering protests it had triggered in Assam and the Northeast and the numbers it had in the Upper House of Parliament.
The bill lapsed with the end of the term of the 16th Lok Sabha in May that led to dissolution of Parliament by President Ram Nath Kovind.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, also the NEDA convenor, further said that the BJP has already rejected the final NRC that was published on Aug 31 and that it cannot be considered as a document of the Assamese people.
