GUWAHATI: A golden langur was injured in a road accident on state highway at Deohati under Abhayapuri police station in Bongaigaon district on Saturday.

Bongaigaon deputy commissioner (DC) Dr MS Lakshmi Priya immediately arrived on the spot and made necessary arrangements for the treatment of the animal.

“I and the DPM, NHM, Bongaigoan reached the spot after a few minutes of the incident. We were on our way back after inspecting vaccination programmes by Health Department in N.Salmara Sub-division area.

The forest department officials were immediately notified. The forest department officials after inspecting the injury took the golden langur to Wild Life Rescue Centre, Saraikhola, BTAD for better treatment,” Lakshmi Priya said in a statement.

It may be noted that Kakoijana Reserve Forest which is located near the accident spot is a home to endangered golden langurs.

The deputy commissioner asked the forest, transport and PWD departments to place signboards and construct an adequate number of rumble-strips from Hapasara to Tulungia so that golden langurs do not become victims of road accidents.

In April, 2020, two golden langurs from Kakoijana Reserve Forest were killed when they were hit by a four-wheeler on NH 31. Earlier in February last year, another langur died due to electrocution.
