Gaurav Gogoi violated poll code, campaigned in Behali during ‘silent period’; alleges Minister Pijush Hazarika

GUWAHATI, Nov 14: Assam Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika has accused Jorhat Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi of violating the Model Code of Conduct during the by-polls in Behali held yesterday.

Hazarika alleged that the Congress MP and his supporters stayed back in Behali and kept on campaigning activities during the “silent period”, and even on the day of polling yesterday, claiming that he has photographic evidence to substantiate his claims.

Addressing reporters in Guwahati today, the senior BJP Minister questioned as to why did the Jorhat MP not return from Behali but stayed back and continued canvassing for the Congress candidate even after the close of campaigning.

“I along with our party leaders, including senior ministers and MLAs who were campaigning in Behali returned after campaigning ended at 4pm on Nov 11. But Gaurav Gogoi and his assocaites did not do so, stayed back and campaigned surreptitiously, violating the Model Code of Conduct,” Hazarika said.

“Gaurav Gogoi and the Congress party keep saying about the Constitution and the need to conform to its principles. Why did they not honour the rules then?” he questioned.

“Does he think he will get away because he cmes from a powerful family? Too bad, the law applies to everyone equally,” he further said.

The Assam Minister, however, said despite resorting to unconstitutional and undemocratic measures, the Congress will bite the dust in Behali and that the BJP candidate will emerge victorious on Nov 23.
