Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has finally admitted to visiting Pakistan and also said that his British wife Elizabeth had lived in Pakistan for a year in 2011.

Gogoi, who was named president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday (May 26), was addressing reporters at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi today (May 28).

He also admitted to his wife and their two minor children holding British Citizenship.

“While my wife was working in Pakistan, I had visited the country around 12 years ago in 2013,” Gogoi said while responding to posers from newsmen.

“My wife stayed in Pakistan for a year in 2011 while working for an NGO,” he added.

The Jorhat Congress MP, while admitting that his wife and their two children are not Indian nationals, said his wife, who looks after their children, had taken the decision after their daughter’ was born ‘s birth in England during the outbreak of Covid-19.

The admission came after Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had raked up the issue of Gaurav Gogoi’s visits to Pakistan and his wife’s alleged links with the Pakistan government and the ISI.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma had also alleged that Gaurav Gogoi’s two minor children hold British citizenship and that sensational details would emerge once the SIT, formed to probe the issue, submits its report in September.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Sarma responded to Gaurav Gaurav admitting to visiting Pakistan and his wife staying in the country for a year and said that “this is just the beginning, not the end”.

He also said that” “the people of Assam and the nation deserve the truth — and they shall have it, in full”.

He further stated that “the people will also not forget — nor forgive — the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi for deliberately promoting such a dangerous and compromised individual into the public life of our country”.

“Finally , Congress MP Shri Gaurav Gogoi has admitted that he visited Pakistan. But let us be very clear — this is just the beginning, not the end. What lies ahead is far more serious. There exists every reasonable ground, supported by credible inputs and documented information, to suggest that Shri Gogoi has maintained proximity with the Pakistani establishment. The Government of Assam, committed to transparency and accountability, will make everything public on 10th September, once the Special Investigation Team (SIT) concludes its comprehensive inquiry. The people of Assam and the nation deserve the truth — and they shall have it, in full. But the people will also not forget — nor forgive — the Congress party and Shri Rahul Gandhi for deliberately promoting such a dangerous and compromised individual into the public life of our country,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma wrote on ‘X’.
