NEW DELHI: The four rapists who got death penalty for the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi – dubbed Nirbhaya –will be hanged on March 20, at 5:30 AM. A Delhi court fixed the death of execution for the four convicts of the brutal Nirbhaya rape and murder case. This is the fourt death warrant issued by the court.
The death warrant was issued a day after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy petition of Pawan Gupta, the last of the four death row convicts. With the President’s rejection, the convicts had exhausted all options for relief from the death sentence.
The four convicts—Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma and Akshay Kumar—were scheduled to be executed on March 3 at 6 AM. But the court deferred it till further orders on the grounds that Pawan’s mercy petition is pending.
Meanwhile, after the verdict Nirbhaya’s mother who has been waiting for seven years for the justice said, “We hope this is the final verdict & there won’t be any more delay.”
“While dying Nirbhaya asked to ensure they get such punishment that such crime is not repeated ever,” Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi stated.
