Former JNU student Sharjeel Imam arrested

GUWAHATI: Former JNU student and Shaheen Bagh protest mastermind Sharjeel Imam has been arrested in Bihar’s Jehenabad on sedition charges.

Sharjeel who threatened to cut off Assam and Northeast from the rest of India has been arrested by Delhi  Police.

The former JNUSU member was on the run for the past four days.

He has been booked in sedition cases lodged across several states for alleged “inflammatory” speeches made during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

“We have arrested Sharjeel Imam from Jehanabad,” said Rajesh Deo, deputy commissioner of police, Crime Branch.

Assam Police also lodged an FIR against Sharjeel for his speech and inter alia commission of offence u/s 13 (1)/18 of the UA(P)ACT read with section 153 A, 153 B and  124 A IPC at Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station on January 25.

Following its Assam’s counterpart, Arunachal Pradesh Police also registered a case against the former JNU student at Crime Branch police station in state capital Itangar on Sunday.
