Former Congress Minister and ex-South Abhayapuri MLA Chandan Sarkar passed away in Bongaigaon early Monday morning after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. He was 62. The former South Abhayapuri legislator suffered a heart attack Sunday night and was rushed to the Lower Assam Hospital where he breathed his last around 5:30 in the morning.

He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Sarkar was inducted into the Tarun Gogoi cabinet in 2015 and was Irrigation and Land Reforms minister for a year during the third term of the Tarun Gogoi-led Assam Government. He was earlier made a parliamentary secretary after the Congress stormed to power for the third straight term in the 2011 assembly elections.

Sarkar, who had even rebelled against Tarun Gogoi’s leadership but later ‘resolved differences’, was elected to the Assam assembly thrice: first in 1991, and then in 2001 & 2011.

Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has expressed shock over Chandan Sarkar’s sudden demise. Senior party leaders, including former chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Ripun Bora, expressed shock over his demise and extended their condolences to the bereaved family members.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also offered their condolences at the passing away of Chandan Sarkar.
