GUWAHATI, Oct 25: Former Assam DGP Khagen Sarma passed away at a private nursing home in Guwahati this evening. He was 64 and was suffering from cancer.

A 1982 batch IPS Officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, he was instrumental in bringing peace to the region.

Born in Konimara village near Tihu in 1955, he secured the first rank in the HSLC examinations from Tihu High School in 1971. He also secured the sixth rank in the then Pre-University (PU) examinations from Cotton College, Guwahati, before completing his post-graduation in Philosophy from Gauhati University.
After initially serving as a college lecturer, he cleared the civil services and went on to serve Assam Police as one of its most dynamic IPS officers. He rose from one position to another and went on to become the DGP of Assam before superannuating from service in 2015.
Khagen Sarma is instrumental in bringing many militant groups, including a large number of ULFA leaders, to the mainstream.
He leaves behind his mother, wife, a son and a host of relatives and friends.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled Khagen Sarma’s demise and oered condolences to the bereaved family members.
He will be cremated will ull State Honours in Guwahati tomorrow (Oct 26).
