Former AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah arrested in assault case

Sankar Jyoti Baruah was arrested by a team of Dibrugarh Police after he was whisked to the district headquarters on Sunday night

Dibrugarh Police arrested former AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah in connection with an incident of physical assault at a petrol pump in Duliajan.

After being summoned by Duliajan Police for questioning after a case was registered against him in connection with the assault on petrol pump staff, Sankar Jyoti Baruah was taken to Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station late Sunday night.

He was formally arrested on Monday morning.

He has been booked under sections 196(1)(a) /196(1) (b)/197(1) (b) /197(1) (c)/197(1) (d) / 3(5) / 352/ 353(1) (b) /353(1) (c) / 353(2) of BNS 2023 after Duliajan Police registered a case (Case No. 90/2025).

Three groups of people had reportedly entered into a confrontation at BN Singh Petrol Depot in Duliajan. Baruah said he was not involved in the quarrel but had tried to put an end to the argument.

He is expected to be produced before a magistrate as part of the legal process involved after his arrest.
