Assam Forest Minister orders high level inquiry on death of birds in Barpeta

Guwahati: The Assam Government on Wednesday ordered high-level inquiry to probe into the death of birds on Monday in Barpeta’s Bohori Silagaon.

According to reports the birds died due to consuming crops sprayed with poison. Around 300 numbers of birds, including sparrows and cuckoos, have been found dead in the area.

Assam Police have arrested one named Manan Ali in connection to the death of the birds. 

Parimal Suklabaidya, Environment and Forest Minister, has asked the Chief Wildlife Warden and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), to institute a probe into the incident and to submit an action taken report immediately.

Taking to his Twitter Suklabaidya wrote, “In the wake of death of scores of birds at Barpeta’s Bohori Silagaon following consuming of crops sprayed with poison in a paddy field,a case has been registered by Barpeta Road Ranger & a suspect named Mannan Ali has been arrested in this connection. The dead birds have been sent for autopsy. Chief Wildlife Warden and PCCF Wildlife have been asked to institute an inquiry into the incident and to take necessary steps immediately”.

 

Chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has brought the matter to the notice of the Environment and Forest Minister and asked him to initiate necessary action.
