Flood situation in Assam worsens

PUBLISHED:

The flood situation in Assam worsened on Thursday as swirling waters washed away part of a concrete bridge on the National Highway 37 at Numaligarh, affecting normal movement of traffic. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials are using massive concrete blocks to try and prevent flood waters from eroding the road and washing away the entire bridge.

Meanwhile, many villages are under water in Numaligarh after a rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. One person died after he drowned at Numaligarh. The deceased has been identified as Khuru Gowala.

On the other hand, the flood situation in Golaghat district remained unchanged for the sixth straight day. Water level of the Dhansiri has also increased, flooding several villages and forcing people to seek refuge in uplands.

“We have lost everything we had. Our house is under water. All our belongings are gone. We could only save ourselves,” an aged villager told News Live.
