Flash floods in Guwahati; 2 dead in wall collapse, landslide

Heavy rains in Guwahati and its outskirts threw normal life out of gear — first last night and then after this morning — with two persons killed in an incident of wall collapse and a landslide in Jorabat locality while one person was reportedly swept away by gushing waters.

A woman died after a wall collapsed on her around 11 pm Thursday following heavy rains that led to chest-deep water at the national highway in Jorabat. The woman, identified as Indira Dorjee, died on the spot when a portion of the wall collapsed on her at Sankardev Nagar locality of Jorabat.

Another person died after he was buried by a mound of earth in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in 13 Mile area. The deceased, identified as Bilad Daimary who hailed from Salmara in Rangia, had come to his sister’s house when he died in the landslide.

On the other hand, unconfirmed reports claimed floodwaters swept away another person at Jorabat.

Meanwhile, massive water-logging was reported in various localities of Guwahati after today’s (Aug 24) showers. Water-logging was reported from areas in Ganeshguri, Bhangagarh, RG Baruah Road, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Zoo Road, Rajgarh Road, Chandmari, Guwahati Club etc throwing life out of gear.
