First Test Day 1: Australia on backfoot as Indian pacers led by Jasprit Bumrah run riot in Perth

GUWAHATI, Nov 22: Australia are on the backfoot at Stumps on Day 1 of the first test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The hosts are tottering at 67/7 at the end of the first day’s play despite skittling India out for 150 runs after the visitors elected to bat first.

Indian stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah ripped apart the Australian top order, first claiming the wickets of openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney and then trapping Steve Smith lbw before sending his Aussie counterpart Pat Cummins back to the pavallion towards the end of the day.

Mohammed Siraj, who picked up two wickets, and debutant Harshit Rana who took the wicket of the dangerous Travis Head ably supported Bumrah.

Alex Carey was batting on 19 and Mitchell Stac on 6 when stumps were drawn for the day.

Earlier in the morning, Bumrah, leading Team India in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, won the toss and elected to bat first.

The decision, however, did not pay well as India kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy top scored making 41 while Rishabh Pant made 37.

KL Rahul, opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal (0), added 26 runs to the team total as India were bundled out for just 150 runs in 49.4 overs.

For the hosts, Josh Hazlewood picked up 4 wickets while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh scalped two wickets each.
