PUBLISHED:

Host Russia’s fairytale run at the FIFA World Cup 2018 ended after they lost 3-4 to Croatia on penalties in the fourth and final quarter-final at Sochi.

The match ended 1-1 after the end of regulation time. Russia drew first blood through Denis Cheryshev’s fourth goal of the tournament while Croatia restored parity in the 39th minute through Andrej Kramaric.

The match went into extra-time where Croatia took the lead through Vida. But Brazil-born Mario Fernandes headed in his first international goal for Russia, five minutes before the end of extra-time.

However, Croatia kept their nerves in the shootout to win 4-3 and oust the hosts to book a place in the semi-finals against England.

On the other hand, England defeated Sweden in the third quarter-final at Samara to enter the last-four stage after 28 years. Harry Maguire and Dele Alli netted for the Three Lions as Gareth Southgate’s young team proved that they are serious title contenders at Russia, 52 years after they won their maiden world cup on home turf.
