The match ended 1-1 after the end of regulation time. Russia drew first blood through Denis Cheryshev’s fourth goal of the tournament while Croatia restored parity in the 39th minute through Andrej Kramaric.

The match went into extra-time where Croatia took the lead through Vida. But Brazil-born Mario Fernandes headed in his first international goal for Russia, five minutes before the end of extra-time.

However, Croatia kept their nerves in the shootout to win 4-3 and oust the hosts to book a place in the semi-finals against England.
