GUWAHATI, Dec 26: A 37-year-old food vendor has been arrested in connection with the shocking incident of sexual assault of a female student inside Chennai’s Anna University campus.
The arrested accused named Gnanasekaran, who runs a road-side eatery in Kotturpuram near the university, was arrested after police zeroed-in on him after scanning video footage of CCTV cameras installed inside the varsity premises.
The victim, a second-year engineering student of the prestigious university, was raped while her male friend was attacked by the vendor inside the varsity campus when the duo were speaking to each other after dinner.
The incident took place on December 23 but came to light after the victim lodged a police complaint the next day.
After attacking the male student, the accused reportedly dragged the girl to near-by bushes where he raped her, reports said.
Meanwhile, opposition parties AIADMK and the BJP condemned the incident and spewed venom on the DMK-led government, saying the incident was another pointer to the “deteriorating law-and-order situation in Tamil Nadu”.
