Farmers take out ‘Dilli Chalo’ march

PUBLISHED:

Thousands of farmers marched towards Parliament demanding loan waivers and better MSPs for their produce. While some took skulls of farmers who commited suicide following loan debts, others shouted ‘Dilli Chalo’.

The farmers’ march, incidentally, became a show of unity of Opposition parties with Congress president Rahul Gandhi, AAP leader and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and other Opposition leaders extending their support to the march and even congregated at Jantar Mantar to flay the “anti-government” policies of the government against farmers.

The AIADMK, DMK, and the BSP were not present in the Opposition’s ‘unity show’.

“I want to assure and reassure you that we are with you,” Rahul Gandhi said while addressing the farmers at Jantar Mantar.

The agitating farmers were camping at the Ramlila ground since yesterday (Nov 29) and took part in the march to Parliament amid heightened security by police. Over 3,500 police personnel were deployed to prevent law and order from deteriorating.

Traffic was disrupted in many parts of the city on Thursday as the farmers marched to the Ramlila ground in the heart of the city on four different routes, starting from Anand Vihar, Nizamuddin and Bijwasan railway stations and Sabzi Mandi, reported PTI.

About 1,200 members of the National South Indian River Interlinking Agriculturalists Association reached the national capital in the early hours of Thursday carrying skulls of two of their colleagues who had committed suicide, their leader P Ayyakannu claimed according to the PTI report.

The group from Tamil Nadu had threatened to march naked if they are not allowed to go to Parliament on Friday. They had last year staged protests at Jantar Mantar with the skulls of eight farmers who killed themselves owing to losses, the report added.
