‘Fani’ spectre ends, skies clear across Assam

PUBLISHED:

The spectre and panic created by cyclone Fani is now over with the cyclonic storm that led to a trail of destruction and devastation in Odisha and coastal Bangladesh crossed Assam after weakening considerably. Although the cyclone brought along with it some amount of rain in the State while also uprooting trees at many places and blowing away tin roofs, damage to property was very minimal.

Rains that lashed Guwahati for many hours on Saturday led to waterlogging at many places. The storm also uprooted trees in many places.

People, however, were unhappy with the preparedness of Government agencies since waterlogging resulting from the rainfall in many localities in Guwahati brought life to a grind on Saturday evening.

“Look at the waterlogging here. GMC and other agencies should have made arrangements to ferry people. Had the impact been more, people would have been in a more precarious situation with little government help,” a resident of Anil Nagar said.

On the other hand, one person has been reported missing when a boat capsized on the Brahmaputra near Guwahati. While four persons swam to safety after the country boat capsized, one person was reported missing.

Meanwhile, the cyclonic storm that lashed many parts of Barak Valley led to a trail of devastation in many palces in Hailakandi district.

The skies, however, cleared since Sunday morning as people heaved a sigh of relief.
