Faf du Plessis Joins Delhi Capitals After Leaving RCB
Faf du Plessis was released by RCB ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and DC secured him at his base price of INR 2 crore. The 40-year-old South African cricketer, known for his experience and leadership, was chosen over KL Rahul, another former IPL captain who also joined DC this season.
Du Plessis has been part of the IPL since 2012 when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed him. He played for CSK until 2015, then moved to Rising Pune Supergiant during CSK’s suspension. He returned to CSK from 2018 to 2021 before joining RCB in 2022, where he was made captain after Virat Kohli stepped down. Under his leadership, RCB reached the playoffs in 2022 and 2024 but failed to win their first IPL trophy.
Delhi Capitals’ Major Team Changes for IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals have never won the IPL and have made significant changes in their squad and coaching staff for the 2025 season. Apart from appointing Axar Patel as captain and Faf du Plessis as vice-captain, DC has also made major coaching appointments:
- Head Coach – Hemang Badani
- Assistant Coach – Matthew Mott
- Team Mentor – Kevin Pietersen
- Support Staff – Munaf Patel, Venugopal Rao, and Vijay Bharadwaj
Former captain Rishabh Pant, who led DC till the last season, was released and picked up by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he has now been appointed captain.
Faf du Plessis’ IPL Career and Experience
Faf du Plessis has played 145 IPL matches, scoring 4571 runs at an average of 35.99 and a strike rate of 136.37. He remains active in franchise cricket and recently played for Joburg Super Kings in SA20. Reports suggest that he may also join Southern Brave in The Hundred, a team owned by GMR Group, which also owns Delhi Capitals.
